David showed that this case is fairly easy; if you want to pursue the issue further, you could examine my TEI stylesheets at http://users.ox.ac.uk/~rrahtz/tei. There, I allow for using "id" attribute on <div> to name files, but also for <div> without attributes (where I use generate-id()). The problems come when - you need to refer to the main document from which the sub files are split off - you want to allow for splitting at different levels (each section within each chapter, in your case). It gets messy. But eminently doable. In fact, I'd say that making this sort of thing work in one stylesheet makes XSL a real pleasure to use. Compared to one's old Perl scripts, it's just bliss Sebastian XSL-List info and archive: http://www.mulberrytech.com/xsl/xsl-list
