You'll need to implement your own parsing of the CDATA ! What about the following ? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:output method="xml" version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" indent="yes"/> <xsl:template match="/"> <body> <i> <xsl:value-of select="substring-before(substring-after(/data, '>'), '<')"/> </i> </body> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> or <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:output method="xml" version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" indent="yes"/> <xsl:template match="/"> <body> <xsl:element name="{substring-before(substring-after(/data, '<'), '>')}"> <xsl:value-of select="substring-before(substring-after(/data, '>'), '<')"/> </xsl:element> </body> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> Hope this helps.
