Does it have to be a single XPath, or can you use XSLT? In th ecase of the latter, easiest is to use <xsl:variable name="x"> <xsl:value-of select="text()|ver[@id=$ver]"/> </xsl:variable> <xsl:value-of select="$x"/> assuming item is current node.
