Well that's because you used what I posted not what I had in my head.
use copy-of not value-of
<xsl:variable name="x">
<xsl:copy-of select="text()|ver[@id=$ver]"/>
</xsl:variable>

that's what the variable is doing (except I messed it up)
Once you've all th enodes in the variable, doing
<xsl:value-of select="$x"/>
gives the string value of the rtf, which is teh concatenation of all its
text node leaves.
