The rules in MK's book span > 10 pages and merit repeated reading and experimentation. specifying exactly what a processor does takes some space, but deciding whether you want text or xml method is trivial it just depends on whether or not you are generating XML, which isn't anything one can give any advice about, given no context by the original poster about why they were wanting to transform to anything at all.
