after the select, the XSL processor waits for an XPath expression. And as it is written on DaveP's excellent FAQ : XSLT can't build XPath expressions from a variable. http://www.dpawson.co.uk/xsl/nono.html#d44e9002 So I think it's the reason (but i'm not sure).
