Write two template rules:

<xsl:template match="node()">
  <xsl:copy/>
  <xsl:copy-of select="@*"/>
  <xsl:apply-templates/>
  </xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="sup[.=-34]">
  subscript
</xsl:template>
