I guess I wasn't clear.  This does not work:

<xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes"><xsl:value-of
select="xpath"/></xsl:text>

If you try to do that, the transformation fails saying you can't embed
<xsl:value-of/> inside of an <xsl:text> element.
