That is correct ... bound variables cannot change within their scope.

You have to look at your problem differently ... don't think of global variables that need incrementing.


If you are counting source tree nodes, consider using <xsl:number>.

If you are counting nodes in the current node list, consider using "position()".

If you are counting down from arbitrary numbers, consider recursive template rule calls.

Unfortunately you haven't given any indication of why you want an incrementing value, so giving help is difficult.
