Probably more importantly than the incompatibility, this would force the system to have _some_ method of writing out a tree in linear XML syntax. Currently everything to do with output is optional, an XSLT system might just do DOM-DOM transforms and never linearise anything at all, ignoring any hints in xsl:output.
