OK, I'll stick my neck out. Its a bit subtle this, for me. 5.2 says <xsl:apply-templates select="*"/> matches any element. <apply-templates/> looks for matches on .... ?? any node??? (including the text nodes which are the 'undesirables' in this case???) Is that the difference?
