Well, I would say you're both right. Moving to 
XML where authors don't control the formatting 
*does* help writers focus on content and it's 
amazingly liberating. 

But being a writer, I do understand wanting something
sort of WYSIWYG -- some level of feedback helps 
the writing process. So, as others have suggested, 
give it to them in something like XMetal, Frame 7, 
or Epic. All three products do a good job of 
supporting the fundamental realities of both XML 
*and* writing. Most of the other XML Editors I've
seen don't do this well,
