No it can't. The relevant part from the XML specification is http://www.w3.org/TR/2000/REC-xml-20001006#NT-Name [4] NameChar ::= Letter | Digit | '.' | '-' | '_' | ':' | CombiningChar | Extender [5] Name ::= (Letter | '_' | ':') (NameChar)* Another point worth noting is that a name must start with a letter, '_' or ':' but not with a number.
