name() is a function, which takes an optional parameter containing the required node.

Try:

    <xsl:template match="/" >
        <xsl:value-of select="name(*)" />
    </xsl:template>

Subject: [xsl] name() of root element

Why does this not select the name of the root *element* but
instead gives me the text value of that element, i.e., the
concatenated text values of every element in my document?

    <xsl:template match="/" >
        <xsl:value-of select="(/node()[1])[name()]" />
        <xsl:apply-templates />
    </xsl:template>

I've tried Xalan 2.5 D1, and Saxon 6.5.2 with the same result.
Since they agree, I probably misunderstand what's going on.

When I try select="/name()" (and variations thereof) I get
error messages from the xsl processor.

 Thanks,

 Joe
