are you trying to do this?

select="attr/atomicValue[normalize-space(../name)='ponumber']"/>
</xsl:element>
...

normalize-space is kind of like what most languages call trim(). In
other words '[LF]ponumber' != 'ponumber' (I guess those really aren't
words)
