safer to use a space rather than nbsp as it produces less visible
changes to the rendering.

An alternative way to get the benefits of the file being xml for further
processing and being able to view in IE as HTMl is to serve the file as
text/xml rather than text/html and use a stylesheet to convert to HTML
_within_ the browser. The stylesheet only needs to have one template,
<xsl:template match="/"><xsl:copy-of select="."/></xsl:template>
