piece of software that did it, but

which won't work for the purpose of hijacking the serializer to output 
entity references, whereas

<xsl:template match="node2">
  <xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&amp;</xsl:text>
  <xsl:value-of select="@attr/>;
</xsl:template>

will work.
