<xsl:variable name="x" select="position()"/> s:AttributeType[position()] means s:AttributeType[position()=position()] so the filter is always true so it is the same as s:AttributeType you want <xsl:variable name="x" select="position()"/> .... s:AttributeType[position()=$x] although thi sis actually a strange thing to want as $x is the position in your for-each which is <xsl:for-each select="./@*"> and as the order of attributes is system-specific and unspecied your current position number is essentially arbitrary.
