Thank you for that, I was not aware and it is VERY good to know.  Is that
parser specific or is it just an XSLT thing in regards to attributes?  I
assumed it read them directly in the order that they existed in the data
tree.

Of course you can have xsl:variable inside a for-each (as I showed) it
isn't re-assigning the value of a variable just definining a new
variable with the same name.

But you really don't want to use position() with select="@*"

you have

<row column1="value" column3="value"></row>

so
<xsl:for-each select="@*">
will process two nodes
column1 and column3 but you could run the stylesheet once and
column1 will be position()=1 and 
column3 will be position()=2

then you could run the same source and same stylesheet again with no
changes and
column1 will be position()=2 and 
column3 will be position()=1
