One possible explanation is that you are running Saxon using the "java -jar"
option - this doesn't search the classpath when looking for classes to load.
Another possibility, of course, is that your class isn't on the classpath.
And of course it's possible that your match="root" isn't being matched.

Using the -TJ option on the command line gives you better diagnostics - it
gives you a complete trace of all the classes and methods that Saxon looked
for, which gives you clues as to why your method wasn't selected.

Saxon-specific questions should really be asked on the saxon-help list or
forum at SourceForge.
