Beyond subscribing to the EXSLT support list I don't have much
experience nor understanding of the state of the current EXSLT
project. I do know that A TON of work has gone into this by a lot of
really respected people in this community and beyond. Obviously
David's suggested path is the right one to take. I'm definitely into
supporting the effort in every way I can, but would want to ensure
that whatever effort is made is made by the direction of the original
group/project members.

Obviously then this discussion needs to move to the EXSLT list...
Colin, I'll assume you will head this up? I will keep an eye out for
the post and offer my support from that end with the disclaimer that a
directive as to how to properly handle this comes from the originating
group members before I would move forward with anything. Obviously if
this group has plans to create a 2.0 extension then theres no need for
double the effort nor confusion of two separate efforts.
