best to say of you want xslt1 or 2. in 2 key('ParentKey',@id) except . will return all category elements with the current id except the current node. in 1 you'd write it as key('ParentKey',@id)[not(generate-id()=generate-id(current()))] > Also I want to check whether any <category> elements > with same @id, exists in all top elements of current > <category> element. not sure what you mean by top element. If you mean ancestor then in 2 that's key('ParentKey',@id) intersect ancestor::category David
