Does xy.js exist? Does the error occur with certain script statements
(e.g. document.write) or does it occur in general?
xy.js does not exist. The transformation fails, so nothing is interpreted.

I am not sure that will help but I fail to see how using output
method="html" together with an XHTML doctype and an XHTML namespace
makes any sense. Output method="html" would serialize recognized HTML
elements in _no namespace_ according to HTML rules but you do not have
any such elements. The only meaningful output method for XHTML 1.0 with
XSLT 1.0 is xml in my view. XSLT 2.0 has output method xhtml.

You and David are right, but with method="xml" it's the same.
I think I have tried _all_ variants I can think of, but no chance.
