I think the point is to sort the word to match as well,
and to try to match it against the regex as a whole:
hello:
matches('ehllo', '^a?e?f?m?r?r?$')
false
farm:
matches('afmr', '^a?e?f?m?r?r?$')
true
farmer:
matches('aefmrr', '^a?e?f?m?r?r?$')
true
