I think a better source for figuring out the status of a particular technology or set of technologies is to take a central website (or websites) and use the trends for websites feature, for example: http://trends.google.com/websites?q=xml.com%2C+biglist.com%2C+xml.coverpages.org&geo=all&date=all&sort=0 That looks more interesting.
