probably $lines[last()]/preceding-sibling::node()/@length could be simplified to $lines[position() &lt; last()]/@length but I doubt that makes any difference as there is a suspision that the error message is generated in part of the code not shown. The list guidelines suggest that you make a complete small test case with input and expected output.
