trace(a,b) always returns a (and the message involving b goes to a 
system-defined place) so the validation or otherwise should be 
unaffected by the trace() function. so the document should validate or 
fail to validate whether or not the trace() function is used.

but that's moving towards a schema question rather than an xpath one, so 
would be off topic for this list.
