I don't see what is the problem...

Even with XSLT 2.0, given this XML document:

<t/>

And this transformation:

<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="
http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform";>
 <xsl:output omit-xml-declaration="yes" indent="yes"/>

  <xsl:template match="/*">
    <xsl:message select="."/>
  </xsl:template>

I get the output of <xsl:message> exactly as wanted:
