I think the only defence of my proposal is the DRY principle: don't repeat yourself. It's intrinsically a good idea if the list of "special" element names is in one place only. That's not to say I would do it this way in practice -- especially when only one element name is "special". I was just responding to Michael M-H's request for alternative suggestions.
