Subject: Ebay protects a musician from selling his own music? From: Max.Hyre@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2002 17:47:40 -0500 |
Dear Copyrighters: Here's a truly weird one: Ebay won't let a garage band sell its own recordings. Much speculation as to why and how, but at a minimum it's a result of Ebay's too-eager copyright-infringement-violation- prevention policy. (How's that for an adjective? I should take up German. :-) Ziff-Davis has a brief notice at http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,660141,00.asp and the musician in question has put up his experience at http://www.azoz.com/music/ebayintro.html where he notes that he has ``resolved [his] customer service issues with eBay...'', but looks into why he had trouble in the first place. The latter is fairly long, with much about dealing with Ebay and getting no meaningful response, but Ebay finally suggest it's due to a policy against selling CD-Rs (to prevent infringement) and/or against mentioning more than one well-known artist in the description (to prevent keyword spamming). The author goes on a hunt to find the _real_ reason. It's an interesting view of where copyright is for those not signed with distributors. -- Best wishes, Max Hyre
