Nancy,

Take a look at this page for the Emily D copyright situation:
http://eir.library.utoronto.ca/rpo/display/poet94.html

As they say, "The copyright situation pertaining to the poetry of Emily
Dickinson is extremely complex since nearly all the poems were published
after her death and the circumstances surrounding the earliest publication
resulted in versions of the poetry that were in many cases significantly
different than the form of the poems as penned by Emily Dickinson...."

Subject: question from a copyright newbie

My organization's small (but growing!) press will be publishing a book that
features a poem, usually a part thereof, at the beginning of each chapter. I
can think of several ways to handle this:
1. Cite the poem to the book from which it was copied (e.g., page 24, The
Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson with the citation in proper style)
2. Request permission from the publisher of the book from which it was
copied
(e.g., the publisher of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson)
3. Request permission from the copyright holder of the poem (e.g., Amherst
College or whatever/whoever holds the copyright to her poems -- ee-gaad, I
hope this isn't necessary!)

Please feel free to reply off-list if it is more appropriate. Thank you in
advance for your informed suggestions.
