For what it's worth, wikipedia claims that Japan has no public domain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_copyright_law However, this isn't stated specifically on http://www.cric.or.jp/cric_e/csj/csj.html It does say that Moral rights persist after the death of the author and past the 50 year economic copyright term.
