Hi Julia,

Take a look at the UMass Amherst library website on plagiarism
 http://www.library.umass.edu/tools/plagiarism/ which describes the services
and provides information for faculty to include in their syllabus and
present in class based on whether they want to have students submit all
papers (recommended) or whether a faculty member will submit suspect papers.

We have negotiated with TurnItIn to have our students papers go into a
separate database that's not accessible by anyone outside the University.
Thus these papers are not part of the database of papers that TurnItIn
checks against for plagiarism.

Regarding the IP policy for student ownership of the work they produce. We
just finished completely revising the Academic Honesty policy and it's not
yet out. I'll need to get back to you on this topic.

Regards,
Marilyn Billings
