At least here in the good ol' U.S. of A., everything is copyright instantly you write it. I.e., your grocery list is copyrighted.

Isnt it so that generic information in a generic presentation is not subject to copyright or pattern protection?

A notepad paper with the words:

Milk
Bread
Butter
Strawberries

is not an artistic or "original enough" creation and thus, if someone reads your grocery list over your shoulder, can reproduce it and publish it (identifying that it is your grocery list is another matter).

At least in many European countries the work that you want to have copyrighted must have a certain standard or originality.
