Without a doubt dramatic changes over the past several years in
scientific, technical, and medical publishing have opened a Pandora's
Box of questions, confusion, and complexity for library patrons,
researchers, and librarians and have become the subject of much
discussion. The Medical Library Association (MLA) continues its
engagement in the conversation and speaks to the issues in its Web cast,
"Scholarly Publishing and Open Access: Straight Talk."

Objectives: At the end of the Web cast, viewers should be able to:

			1.	Introduce, define, and explain
significant models of scholarly publishing

2. Explore the impact of open access on hospital libraries, academic
libraries, and authors
3. Discuss practical examples of new models of scholarly publishing and
describe actions from both university and hospital perspectives to
support new approaches

Part 1: What Is Scholarly Publishing?

			1.	definition of scholarly publishing

			3.	key terms and concepts
			4.	associations involved in the issues
			5.	key issues in the publishing industry

access: what new models are emerging, what are the flavors of open
access, what are the concerns among publishers, and what about issues of
sustainability?

Part 3: What Is the Impact on Libraries and Their Users?

			1.	Impact and concerns for hospital
libraries
			2.	Impact and concerns for academic
libraries
			3.	Impact, benefit, and concerns for the
author/researcher

Participants can earn up to 3.5 MLA CE contact hours:

Session: 2 hrs + .5 hrs = 2.5 CE
			*	Web cast and 2nd Wraparound (Discussion)
Session : 2 hrs + 1 hr = 3.0 CE
			*	Web cast and both Wraparound
(Discussion) Sessions: 2 hrs + 1.5 hrs = 3.5 CE

You must turn on the closed captioning application in the Windows Media

			*	Sign language interpretation will be
provided during the Web cast. If you need closed captioning and/or sign

CAMPUS ACCESS
Directions:

			*	The National Library of Medicine, on the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Campus, is located on Maryland Route
355, at Rockville Pike and Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda
			*	The library is on the Metro Red Line
stop (Medical Center)
			*	MetroBus and Montgomery County Ride-On
Bus services also stop at the Medical Center, next to the Metro (Medical
Center Stop)

Visiting the NLM/NIH:

			*	You must get a visitor's pass before
coming to the NLM. You cannot enter NLM without it. When you arrive on
the NIH campus, go to the Visitor's Center (near the Metro and bus
stops)
			*	All visitor vehicles will be inspected
before being allowed on campus. You must have a government-issue photo
I.D. in order to get a visitor's pass
			*	Visitors will be asked to show one (1)
form of identification (a government-issued photo ID-driver's license,
passport, green card, etc.) and to state the purpose of their visit.
			*	If you drive or take a taxi, please
allow yourself an extra 30-40 minutes to be sure that you can get your
vehicle inspected, obtain your visitor pass, and arrive on time.
Everyone who carpools with you must have a photo I.D. in order to come
on campus.
			*	Security will check all book bags,
briefcases, and handbags as you go through the library (Buildings 38 and
38-A)

Please allow yourself an extra 30-40 minutes for your vehicle inspection
and to get your visitor pass.
Parking:
Parking is limited. You must pay to park in some visitor lots, with
rates up to $12.00 per day. The campus map shows where you may park.
