Karen,

As an instructor at an academic institution, the person should check to see
who really own her work and the implications of that ownership.
Technically, it is likely that the institution owns her handouts, although
the institution may not care what she does with them. She'd better consult
her faculty (employee) manual.

While there are no identifying marks on the original photographs, she has
used them without permission. Could the publisher or photographer tell that
she used their photographs? How would they view her use to make a
derivative work? Is the risk of being discovered palpable for her?

Jill
