If Alien were a 4K game, it would be a good one to hack to finally have a
decent PAC MAN for the 2600. Maybe turn the between maze bonus screen into
the intermissions.

I think they use the player missles for the dots instead of playfield 
graphics like the 2600 Pac Man. If you look closely you'll notice
they're staggered, not straight.

That doesn't look right in text version because the vertical spacing
is way too wide. But that seems to be how it was done. This would give
you up to 18 dots per horizontal tunnel.
