This was another option I hadn't thought of, and the one I went with. The
good thing about it is that I didn't have to totally rewrite the routine
(though it had to be split into two parts). Thanks, Manuel!
We shall see how the feedback goes on my recent testbed... if all OK, I will
post the source code, as the game is very close to complete (but, without
the title, alas).
