I thought the Supercharger hardware handles the heavy lifting of the loading, not the program. The program just triggers the hardware and receives the event when it's done, right?

No, the SC hardware merely supplies the state of the audio signal (+/-) when address 1FF9 is read. The 2600 CPU (and timer) is doing all the work.
