I think Seaquest does something like what you are looking for. The player's submarine is one sprite and the sharks or enemy subs are the second. The missiles are used to create either torpedoes or a diver, the latter by shifting the horizontal position of the missile a pixel or two each line. (I haven't disassembled it, so I'm only surmising this, but I doubt the ball is being used.)
