DivX the pay-per-view DVD competitor and DivX ;) the codec are two separate things. The programmers called it DivX ;) as a thumb in the face to the failed format. I wish they had chosen a unique name... The smiley isn't enough.


While standalone DVD players don't support the DivX ;), if it becomes popular enough they might do something like the Rio Volt and support PC-centric codecs in future DVD players.
