There was an ANALOG (or was it ANTIC - I'm almost 100% it was ANALOG) that published a program called mini-COMP (or something). It was written in Atari BASIC (for the 8-bit computers) and compiled a subset of Atari BASIC into 6502 machine language. It also included one or two example programs with the article. I don't have my magazines handy but: http://www.atarimagazines.com more than likely has it. I'm sorry I can't remember which issue. I thought you might want to peruse this article as a jumping off point. The interesting thing to me about this article is that the program and system it ran on WAS the target machine as well. (Heck, I'm even pretty sure I typed it in as well :)
