I'm not sure if this really is a proper interlaced signal, but my TV seems to recognize it as well. The diagonal lines seem to have a higher resolution, and the cube display seems to have striped blocks with the stripes offset by one interlaced line. As far as I can tell it even seem to work on my PAL system without suffering from the usual PAL colour.loss problem. This is really cool. But don't expect proper emulation of interlaced displays in z26 any time soon. ;-) Unfortunately the interlace doesn't seem to help your flickering chrone-colour display much. For a puzzle/strategy game with a mostly static display the flicker is probably too annoying. But maybe your original idea with striped blocks works a bit better with the higher resolution of an interlaced display.
