you can use a switcher, just not the old slider one.  I was using a  
coax selector that I picked up from Radio Shack, it worked really well.

I'm now using the Cybertech S-Video Card to get s-video and stereo  
sound out of the 2600 for a much better picture.  You can get that from
http://www.atari2600.com/
1) click "online-store" (topmost switch on the left)
2) click "2600" (middle of the top row of game systems)
3) click "atari 2600 hardware"
4) click "S-video card"
