[Virtools] "Folding" Textures around a 3d model

Hello!
I am creating a game and I am using 3d Studio Max for modelling. I would
like you to tell me how I can put in a square texture (256-256) all the
sides of a mesh and further, how I can create light materials.
For example in the space race game that the Virtools team has developed, the
texture of the space ship contains all the sides of the model (it looks like
someone has folded the texture around the model). How can I achieve that for
my own models? Is it a special program or a plug-in that does it or what?
Does this technique reduce the file size of a .cmo file? Where can I find
more info on texturing techniques for keeping small file sizes?

   Thanks in advance!

       Marios.
