its a good idea to use Virtools to build a demo and a game.

I think yes, but depends on the amount of coffein abuse you can handle.

Photoshop Light for TGAs, Jpgs ... Painter from Corel (former
Metacreations)is the best IMHO.
But you can keep 2D cheap.
Max* and CharacterStudio from Discreet. Are the mainstream apps., anything
else is nice to have.
(Are there some flamethrowers switched on?)
And last but not least: Virtools Dev 2.1

1) Ask Virtools for an eval. Copy for 2-3 months. Asking costs nothing.

2) If 1=NO look for www.yellonet.de => go to Interactive => Qoobee and the
Testdemo (60 days),
    maybe this is enough for your actual needs. Ask if you can upgrade from
Qoobee to Virtools Dev 2,
    you want to upgrade, believe me. The big box (Dev2), is the good box.
3) Go and buy the really good book from Jean Marc Gauthier "Creating
Interactive 3-D Actors
    and their Worlds " around 1/2 of the book is directly Virtools related.
And a good part of the
    rest is about the import from Max to Virtools.
4) Visit the www.TheSwapMeet.com and stay there. :-)
If you  don't have a very specific task, which makes the Virtools SDK
necessesary, skip it for a moment.
Your will have enough to learn, inside the Virtools interface to get your
job done in the 2 months.
