When you write an exporter for Virtools, you do not write directly to the
CMO or NMO.

Instead, you create an instance of the appropriate Dev element(s) (such as
3D Entity, Mesh, etc.) and configure that element's attributes as necessary.
Then, you call the save functions for your elements and the information is
stored in the appropriate format.

IMHO, I think that it is easiest to write a Dev plugin to open the target
file type and perform the translations inside of Dev...
