RE: [Virtools] Virtools Dev 2 for immersive VR

Hello Volker,

Actually Z-A is proposing an ‘all-in-one’ SASCube solution, integrating all the hardware and software, including the Virtools extensions for active stereoscopic vision and distributed computing. You can contact them directly for pricing info (contact info on www.z-a.net).

For other immersive/Virtools technology, if anyone is interested, you can contact us directly, as we have specific behaviours for various input devices, stereoscopic systems, distributed systems, etc.. all things related to VR)

This is incredible!

I remember, five years ago when I was still in University, a friend of

mine used to work for a Frauenhofer Institute's cave project. It was

build with a bunch of SGIs (which were usually malfunctioning). The cave

did cost several millions to build and quite some staff was required to

run and maintain it. I can only guess what a pain the authoring for

environments and interaction must have been. It is great to see a

powerful tool like Virtools gaining more and more attention in the high

end market. Even though the frame rate seemed a little low. Is this due

to the movie compression or just not optimized yet?

I'm really interested in knowing if there are any plans to build a 'all

in one - solution' that could be purchased? How much did it actually

cost to build this system?

This makes me think of about the future, where will we be in five years?

Maybe there will be a consumer cave solution and in ten years something

like this will be just as ususal as a PSX, GameCube or XBox.

Hi all,

I thought you might be interested in checking out Virtools integrated with the SASCube (an immersive room with 4 screens):

http://www.z-a.net/imagina2002/index.en.html

The application shows the duck demo in this cave-like environment, in stereoscopic vision. It demonstrates things like distributed processing of a Virtools application on a cluster of PCs, with synchronization of the displays. Usually these kind of applications would require big hardware like SGI machines, but here it’s running on a slightly modified version of Virtools Dev2, with standard PCs, making it much more affordable. You can also check out the press release about this on our website:

http://www.virtools.com/news/press_35.asp

Besides the integrated SASCube/Virtools solution, we can make that kind of technology available if some of you are interested.

François
