But your document has

  <Root name="D2" type="D2" xmlns="";>

so the element is in the namespace";

so add xmlns:P=""; to your xsl:stylesheet,
then go

<xsl:copy-of select="document('d3.xml')//P:detailedDescription"/>

This is normal XPath behaviour, nothing to do with the fact that this is
not the main input document.
