RE: [xsl] The Future of Browser-Bound XML?

I've often imagined that the future of the browser lay in some sort of
general purpose display layer for devices (Tablet PC, PDA, Desktop) that
had an engine (perhaps similar to Apple's OSX Quartz Post Script display
layer) that would render XSL:FO and/or SVG natively.

Some way off maybe, but quite do-able. After all, a bunch of students in
Helsinki have already put together a Java-based browser that renders FO
natively already.

Certainly I think FO needs to mature a bit more (it feels clunky at the
moment and too stuck in the publishing paradigm). But maybe 'son of FO'
may succeed in tying together what can appear at times to be a loose
collection of standards, SVG, SMIL, Xforms, etc.

One thing is for sure though, this kind of thing won't happen overnight.
We'll be hacking around with the (X)Html model for some time to come.
Not sure if the 'browser' will continue to live on as an app in its own
right though.

I've often wondered whether Adobe Acrobat wouldn't make a nice native
XML 
browser if it had built in FO(and SVG!) support and an XSLT engine. Mind

you, I'm not asking them to parse HTML ... wouldn't wish that on anyone.
